Cookie Policy
Last updated: September 2026
The short version: Tape sets no strictly necessary cookies. We use Google AdSense to show ads and Microsoft Clarity for analytics; ads are shown to everyone in a non-personalized form by default, and both become personalized only if you accept, which you can change at any time.
What are cookies
Cookies are small text files that websites can store in your browser to remember information between visits — for example, login state, preferences, or tracking identifiers for analytics and advertising.
Strictly necessary
Tape sets no strictly necessary cookies. The site has no accounts and no login state, so there is nothing to keep signed in.
Analytics cookies
These are set only if you accept them in the cookie banner. We use Microsoft Clarity, which shows us how the site is used through heatmaps and session replays. It sets the following cookies:
- _clck — stores an anonymous identifier so a returning visitor can be recognised. Persistent.
- _clsk — groups the pages you view into a single session. Expires after one day.
- CLID — identifies the first time a browser encounters Clarity.
- MR — used by Microsoft to manage its own measurement.
These cookies are set by Microsoft, which acts as an independent data controller for the data they carry and may process it outside the European Union. If you reject analytics, or before you make a choice, the script is never loaded and none of these cookies are set.
Advertising cookies
Tape shows ads through Google AdSense. Google may set cookies on this site to serve, measure, and — if you consent — personalize those ads. Depending on your consent choice and your location, this can include cookies such as:
- IDE / test_cookie — used by Google's ad delivery network (DoubleClick/Google Ads) to measure ad performance and, where personalization is on, to tailor ads to your interests.
- __gads / __gpi / _gac_gb — used by Google to limit how often you see the same ad and to relate ad clicks to activity on advertisers' sites.
Before you make a choice, and if you reject advertising, Google still shows ads but serves them without personalization: it does not use these cookies to tailor ads to you based on your browsing, though it may still use limited technical data for basic functions like frequency capping and fraud prevention. Google acts as an independent data controller for the data it collects through AdSense; details are in the Google Ads and content network privacy FAQ.
Local storage
Separately from cookies, Tape uses your browser's local storage to remember your cookie choice and minor preferences such as your last-used effect settings. This data stays on your device and is never transmitted to us or anyone else. Tape also installs a service worker, which caches the site's own files in your browser so it loads faster and works offline; it stores no personal data.
Third-party requests
Tape serves its own code, libraries and fonts from its own domain. Google AdSense loads on every visit, since it's how the site funds itself, and it can see standard technical request information such as your IP address and browser type. If you reject analytics, or before you make a choice, the site makes no other request to any third party.
If you accept, the Clarity script is also loaded from Microsoft, which can see the same kind of technical information, and AdSense switches from non-personalized to personalized ads. We don't control or receive this data.
Changing your choice
You can review or withdraw your consent at any time: . Withdrawing consent stops any further analytics collection.
You can also control cookies through your browser's settings, which let you view, block, or delete cookies on a per-site basis.
If this changes
If Tape adds other cookies in the future, this page will be updated first, and — where required by law — you'll be asked for consent before any non-essential cookie is set.
