Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2026
The short version: Tape never uploads your photos or audio — all processing happens in your browser, on your device. We show ads through Google AdSense and use Microsoft Clarity for analytics; ads are non-personalized by default, and both are personalized only if you agree.
What Tape does with your photos
Every image effect in Tape runs using your browser's built-in canvas rendering. When you drop a photo into the editor, it's loaded directly into your browser's memory and processed there. It is never sent to a server, never uploaded anywhere, and never stored outside your own device.
When you click "Save frame," the resulting image is generated locally and offered to you as a direct download. We have no copy of it, and no way to access it.
What data we collect
Tape uses Microsoft Clarity to understand how the site is used, so we can improve it. Clarity records how visitors interact with the page — clicks, scrolling, mouse movement, which controls are used — and combines this into session replays and heatmaps.
Clarity runs only if you accept it in the cookie banner. If you reject it, or before you make a choice, the Clarity script is not loaded at all and no analytics data is collected.
Clarity never receives your photos or audio. These are processed in your browser's memory and are never transmitted, so they cannot appear in a session replay as files or data — only the interface around them is recorded.
Microsoft acts as an independent data controller for the data Clarity collects, under its own privacy terms, and may process it outside the European Union. Details are available in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Advertising
Tape shows ads through Google AdSense to fund the site. AdSense loads on every visit. By default, and if you reject the advertising category, ads are shown in a non-personalized form: Google does not use your browsing activity to choose which ads you see, though it may still use limited technical data for things like frequency capping and fraud prevention.
If you accept, ads become personalized: Google may use cookies and similar technologies, together with data from your visits to other sites, to show ads based on your interests. Google acts as an independent data controller for this data, under its own privacy terms. Details are available in the Google Ads Privacy FAQ, and you can review or manage ad personalization directly at Google Ad Settings.
AdSense never receives your photos or audio, for the same reason Clarity doesn't: these files are processed in your browser's memory and are never transmitted anywhere.
Legal basis and your choices
Where the GDPR applies, our legal basis for analytics, and for personalized advertising, is your consent. Non-personalized advertising relies on our legitimate interest in funding a free tool, balanced against your privacy, and involves minimal data processing. You can withdraw consent at any time by reopening your cookie choices, which stops any further personalized collection. You also have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.
Cookies
Google AdSense sets cookies on every visit to serve and measure ads, and — if you accept — to personalize them. If you accept analytics, Microsoft Clarity also sets its own cookies to recognise a session and a returning visitor. Your cookie choice itself, and minor preferences such as your last-used settings, are kept in your browser's local storage, which stays on your device. See our Cookie Policy for the full list.
Third-party services
Tape serves its own code, libraries and fonts from its own domain. Google AdSense loads on every visit, since it's how the site funds itself, and can see standard technical request information such as your IP address and browser type. If you reject analytics, or before you make a choice, the site contacts no other third party.
If you accept, the Clarity script is also loaded from Microsoft, which can see the same kind of technical information, and AdSense switches to personalized ads. No photo or audio data is included in any of these requests.
Storage on your device
Tape keeps your cookie choice and minor preferences, such as your last-used effect settings, in your browser's local storage. It also installs a service worker that caches the site's own files so it loads faster and works offline. Both stay on your device, hold no personal data, and are cleared if you clear your browser data for this site.
Children's privacy
Tape is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children, and analytics only ever run with consent.
Changes to this policy
If Tape's data practices change, this page will be updated and the "last updated" date above will reflect the change.
